Abstract submitted by James T. McKim:

Working Towards a “Beloved Community”

Abstract: What would it take to move from division to Beloved Community—not in theory, but in real life? Drawing on personal experiences across technology, athletics, philosophy, and faith-based leadership, and grounded in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision of a community rooted in justice, equity, and love James McKim will guide participants through examining how bias and discrimination operate at interpersonal, institutional, and structural levels, reflect on the ways diversity shapes lived experience, and consider why communities often fall short of belonging. The session then shifts toward transformation, highlighting equity, inclusion, and belonging as essential practices using agape—bold, unconditional, redemptive love—as the force Dr. King believed could turn division into connection.
